While bleach can be used to purify water, how old it is makes a difference in it efficacy. Here is the information for determining the age of Clorox:

Using specific information from Clorox’s Product Specialist, even when stored between 50-70 degrees Fahrenheit, Clorox begins to lose its potency after 6 months, with it then decreasing in potency by 20% every year before being completely degraded to salt and water. Note that the degradation is based on when it was manufactured, not when it arrived at the store or on your shelf. They provided the key to finding the production date:

Code Plant Year Date

MD21002 MD2 1= 2001 002nd day of year

A90288 A9 0= 2000 288th day of year

With this key, you can easily determine the production date of your bottle of Clorox, and understand where it stands in its shelf life. You can find out more about Clorox specifically here. This is useful for understanding its potency as a cleaning agent, but it’s crucial if you’re considering using bleach to purify water in emergencies. If you are using another brand of bleach, see if they have a website that can provide the same info for accuracy.
